Trend Report: Fall/Winter 2015

Hi everyone!

Since coming back from the Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis, I’ve been trying to put my finger on exactly what the upcoming trends would be. Usually, after our return, we can say for certain what’s going to be “in” next season, but honestly, it was difficult to see any recurring patterns, colours or themes this year at the Spring market!

But worry not! I dug a little deeper and reviewed all our, and other bloggers’, Quilt Market pictures, and I dived into the depths of the Internet to get a better picture of what’s going to be hot in the world of quilts in the upcoming months! So without further ado, here’s our top 4 trends for this Fall/Winter!

#1: Houses

This might sound like a bit of a weird category… but what I mean by “houses” is everything from homes to cottages, mobile houses, campers, markets, farms and more! Most importantly, these houses are always very modern and colourful. We can see both this trend in the actual fabrics, or in quilt blocks.

Here are a few examples of our newest fabrics that fit this trend quite nicely!

The “houses” trend can even be seen in digital quilting events like this very popular sew-along by Lori Holt, designer for Riley Blake of groups like “Modern Minis” and “Bake Sale”.

-Purple tones:

I’ll confess right away, purple is my favourite colour. I swear, my personal bias doesn’t come to play when I say that purple will be extremely popular this Fall and Winter. I love this colour the most because it’s so versatile! Lighter and brighter purples can be very girly, yet deep and rich hues can be very masculine and regal. Last year’s “Color of the Year” was Radiant Orchid, and this Spring, we saw Lavender Herb make it’s way in the Pantone Spring collection… no wonder purples are still going strong! Even Quilt Market’s e-newsletter “e-insider” agrees with me for this: purples are going to be super trendy in the next few months. We have so many beautiful fabrics in a wide variety of purple hues coming out this Fall that I don’t even know where to start!

-Mini Patterns

Another hot trend when it comes to fabric patterns are minis. I know that this is a style that we’ve seen now for a few years, but this year we’ll see them in slightly different styles. For example, while the shirtings are still quite popular, most minis will be in bright and contrasting hues, and the designs are not always geometric but instead may represent objects or lettering. Minis are also a complete reversal to the last few years’ trends of big and bold patterns. To give you an idea, here’s what I mean by minis versus big and bold:

Traditional and modern quilters will both enjoy working with these small and detailed patterns! Since mini patterns are quite discrete, it’s easy to replace a solid with a mini to create much more dimension and detail in all your projects! Here are a few examples of the newest mini lines from all our suppliers:

-Modern Animals

Finally, our last trend is “modern animals”. Some bloggers are reporting more precisely on exactly WHAT animal will be trendy, but honestly, I believe that it won’t really matter if it’s an owl, a deer, or a fox, just as long as it’s in a modern style. Since animals have been a constant trend in the last few years, we’re now starting to see more elaborate patterns and creative ways of making them into quilt blocks and appliques. Take a look:

Oh, and let’s not forget groups that were pictured above like Kimono Garden (which has a great butterfly pattern) and Woodland Spring!

Finally, take a look at all these amazing creations that I found on Pinterest that make use of animal imagery as quilt blocks and appliques! For more details about each quilt or block, please visit our Pinterest board.

As you’ve seen in all the gorgeous fabrics we just showed you, many incorporate more than one trend at the time, which may be why it’s been so hard to pinpoint exactly what will be trendy this Fall and Winter. However, I think that with these 4 trends (Houses, Purple, Minis and Modern Animals), you have a very good idea what to keep an eye out for! What other trends have you noticed? Which is your favorite? Share your thoughts with me in the comment section below, I love reading you!

Have a great summer everyone!
